About Us

The Dunbar Alumni Federation is a distinguished organization that brings together graduates of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Washington, DC. Established in 2002, our nonprofit corporation operates as a tax-exempt entity dedicated to providing scholarship and financial support to students and alumni of Dunbar High School. Beyond monetary assistance, we foster a sense of community, connection, and celebration among all members of the Dunbar family.

Our History

Dunbar Senior High School in Washington, DC, has a storied history that began in 1870. It was the first public high school for African-Americans in the District of Columbia and the United States. Over the years, Dunbar High School has served as a beacon of excellence, nurturing generations of scholars, leaders, and achievers.

The Dunbar Alumni Federation was established in 2002 to continue the proud legacy of Dunbar High School. We serve as an alliance of alumni members, classes, friends, and supporters, working in partnership with the school's leadership and faculty. Through our collective efforts, we have made significant progress in mobilizing alumni across eight decades, providing scholarships, and supporting student and faculty development activities.

Today, Dunbar High School enters a new era with a state-of-the-art 21st-century campus, guided by a vision of smaller learning communities, professional development, academic interventions, school climate and culture, and parent engagement. As an organization, we are committed to supporting this vision and building bridges from the past to the future. We honor the legacy of Dunbar High School by fostering pride, unity, and continued excellence in education.
