Dunbar Alumni Federation, Inc. - “Celebrating 150 Years of Dunbar Excellence!”

Washington, DC (November 10, 2021 ) – “Celebrating 150 Years of Excellence!”, Dunbar Alumni Federation, Inc. (DAF) will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the historic Paul Laurence Dunbar High School on Sunday, November 14, 2021, 4pm to 6pm, virtually.

 The Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School in Washington DC was established in 1870 and was the first public high school for African-Americans in the District of Columbia and the United States of America. Dunbar High School (DHS), initially called the Preparatory High School for Colored Youth, opened its doors in the basement of the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church, between Eye and K Streets, NW. DHS operated out of the Thaddeus Stevens School from 1871 – 1872; the Charles Sumner School from 1872 – 1877, the Myrtilla Miner school at 7th & Church Street, NW and remained there until 1891 when it became the M Street High School. Over the years, the school has operated in two additional locations, First and N Streets, NW, (1916) an New Jersey Avenue (1977) and ultimately returning to its First and N Streets, NW site as a state of the art, modern facility in 2013.

For many years, DHS has been recognized around the country as the producer of the city and country’s “best and brightest” students, scholars, and achievers. A few notable graduates and achievers include: Senator Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, General Benjamin O. Davis, Judge William Hastie, Brigadier General Elmer T. Brooks, NFL star Vernon Davis, Rev. Dr. Leonard Smith of Arlington Zion Baptist Church , the Honorable DC Congressmen Walter E. Fauntroy and Eleanor Holmes Norton, the 6th Mayor of the District of Columbia Vincent C. Gray, The Honorable Ambassador Francis X. Taylor, NBA star Aurelius Benn and the Honorable Judge Kaye K. Christian and Arlene Robinson.

 ” Today, the Dunbar family of students, faculty, alumni, city officials, friends and supporters assemble around the world to honor and celebrate the founding and legacy of the great institution of the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School of Washington, DC. The evening will feature class reunions and watch parties, compelliing stories of Dunbar history, “The String Queens” musical artists, comedy and spoken word performances by students, faculty and alumni and an announcement of the 4th cohort of Legend & Pioneers.” “

“We are particularly pleased to announce that Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, a 1955 graduate of Dunbar has reintroduced the Paul Laurence Dunbar Commemorative Coin Act, directing the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in recognition of Paul Laurence Dunbar, one of the most influential African-American poets in American literature, ahead of the 150th anniversary of Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School in the District of Columbia. The surcharge on each coin sold would benefit scholarships and similar activities of the Dunbar Alumni Federation.” What an evening this will be”, said DAF Chair Carrie Thornhill.

DAF is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable and educational corporation organized in 2002. The organization works in partnership with the leadership and faculty of the school to create better futures for Dunbar students and graduates. DAF is an alliance of alumni members, classes, friends and supporters providing student scholarships for college, financial aid, financial and moral support for student and faculty development activities. Over the brief period of nineteen years, DAF has achieved great progress in mobilizing alumni across eight decades, coordinating efforts of Classes to provide supports to Dunbar students, faculty and school, disbursing over $2M in college scholarships and development activities to over 850 students. Moreover, DAF encouraged the formation of the Dunbar Room at Sumner School, established an Endowment Fund, and advocated for the new building and a renewed focus on excellence.
